What is Adwords - How to Place PPC Ads on Google

Pay per click advertising, also known as ppc, is a way to post ads on search engines like google or yahoo. When you want to advertise for your product or service you have the option of going to sites like google’s Adwords or Yahoo’s Overture and placing ‘sponsored listings’ that show up on google or yahoo when someone types in a search term. You also choose a price that you are willing to pay each time someone clicks on your ad and is sent to your website.

The Idea Behind PPC

When a potential customer enters a search term, also known as ‘key words’, in google or yahoo that matches the key words you chose to trigger you ad, your advertisement appears in the ‘sponsored’ list on the right side of the screen. If the person chooses to click on your ad they are redirected to your website and you pay a predetermined price for that click. The more people that click your ad the more traffic comes to your website with the intention of buying what you have to sell.

How Your Ad is Found

For your ad to show up on google or yahoo you have to choose the right ‘key words’, the words people are using to search for what you have to offer. For example, if you were selling mufflers you would choose key words like “buy cheap muffler”, “buy honda muffler” or “best priced ford muffler” depending on the kind of muffler your selling. You would link those key words to your ad which would in turn cause your ad to show up when someone does a search using those specific key words.

How to Find ‘Key Words’

You can find the kind of “key words” people are typing by using “key word tools” like the one provided by google adwords. All you do is type a search term you think people will use to find your product and the “key word tool” will provide a list of similar search terms people use and the amount of people using those terms. By choosing the “key words” people use the most and linking them to your ad you can have a general idea of how many people will see your ad. If you have written a eye catching ad a good amount of those people should click your ad and be directed to your website. Choosing the correct key words is essential for a successful PPC campaign.

How Your Ad is Ranked

There are a lot of different aspects involved in how your ad is ranked. First, and most obvious, is how much you are willing to pay for each time a potential customer clicks on your ad. The higher the bid is the higher your ad is placed on the page. It is also very important that your ad and key words are relevant to your landing page. For example, if your ad says your selling cameras but your landing page is selling cat food your ad will be ranked lower because the landing page doesn’t relate to your ad. Low relevance will also cause your cost per click to be higher if you want a good ranking. There are other factors that determine your ranking but these are two of the most important.

Warning About PPC Advertising

While pay per click advertising can bring massive amounts of traffic to your site you have to make sure the traffic is adding up to sales. A common problem newbies to ppc have is getting tons of traffic coming to their site that doesn’t convert to sales and having to pay large amounts of money for all the traffic that clicked on their ad. There are options in the ppc campaign set up that allow you to set a predetermined amount you are willing to pay per day. Once that amount is reached your ad will stop showing, thus preventing any more cost to you but also stopping the traffic flow to your site. So it is very important to be using specific key words that show the customer is already looking to buy so that your ad will convert your clicks to sales. Examples of this would be “buy a muffler”, “where to purchase a good muffler” and so on. The adwords key word tool will help you find the most relevant key words to use to bring targeted traffic to your site.

Since most people use search engines like google and yahoo to find products and services on the internet ppc is a very effective way to drive traffic to your site. For the best results make sure you write a good ad for your product, use the most specific relevant keywords for what you are selling and make sure the dollar amount you bid on a click is high enough to get you on the front page. If your ad is not producing the amount of traffic you desire then work on changing your ad, getting more keywords that have high traffic related to them and see what a ppc ad professional has to say about your campaign. The campaign you run will change as you progress and certain aspects will need to be changed as you move on but if you check the campaigns results on a regular basis you should be able to continue to run a successful ppc campaign.
